Outdoorama is Next Weekend

It is that time of year again. Time for the annual staff pilgrimage to Novi for Outdoorama. Outdoorama had been going on in the Detroit area for the last several decades.  This year as it has been for the last several it is also hosted at the same venue as the Lakefront and Cottage living show.  Your admission to one of these shows gives you crossover access to the other at no additional charge. Located at the Suburban Collection Showplace in Novi, this is always a weekend not to miss.  This year’s dates are February 28- March 3. Keep reading to see some of the attractions at this year’s event.

Timberworks Lumberjack Show

See Lumberjack World Championship competitors go head-to-head in modern-day Lumberjack competition! Captivating audiences for over 25 years, Timberworks Lumberjack Show powered by STIHL includes events such as ax throwing, chopping, log rolling, crosscut sawing, hot sawing and chainsaw carving. These century-old skills were used in the logging camps of North America in the early 1900s. To pass idle time, lumberjacks would challenge opposing logging camps in head-to-head competitions.

Big Buck Night

Thursday – 7 pm (seating starts at 6:30 pm)

Presented by Michigan Out of Doors TV Show

This is a long time tradition. Celebrity hosts Jimmy Gretzinger and Jenny Olson will interview the lucky Michigan hunters who bagged some of the largest whitetail deer of the season. Special consideration is given to lucky hunters who have amazing stories about their kill. This one night show will be filmed for airing on the upcoming television program and is a must-see for every Michigan deer hunter!

Fly Tyers Corner

Come watch some of the top fly tiers in Michigan as they set up and demonstrate their favorite patterns or make a request. This is a constant workshop for anglers that share an interest in this artful pastime. It is presented by local experts and guides from the Michigan Fly Fishing Club.

Antique & Classic Fishing Tackle

Visit them in booth #5150

Terry McBurney, award-winning Woods-n-Water News writer, will be on hand all four days of the Show exhibiting some of his “Made in Michigan” fishing tackle collection. He is a member of the National Fishing Lure Collectors Club, the Old Reel Collectors Association and is well versed in a variety of lures, reels, rods and accessories. He will be answering questions and offering FREE appraisals. Outdoorama visitors are invited to bring in their old fishing tackle tucked away in the barn, basement or garage.

The Natural Resources Commission met today in Bay City. There were no orders for information or action on the agenda. The big news was the commission brought back up the order to reinstate the year-round coyote season, and a vote will happen in August to satisfy posting and notice requirements. MUCC created the Coyote Coalition to put pressure on the NRC, and with today’s inaction, we know that it’s working. With the continued support of the coalition, we will continue fighting to protect proposal G. Consider joining the Coyote Coalition , and let the commission know that inaction is not acceptable, and to follow their legal charge and responsibility. Chair Becky Humphries announced new committee memberships. Wildlife Committee will be chaired by Commissioner John Walters, Governance, Finance and Policy will be chaired by Chair Humphries, Fisheries will be chaired by Commissioner Dave Anthony. There were no other orders for information or action. The next meeting returns to Lansing on July 10.

Hosted by the North American Invasive Species Management Association (NAISMA), this week encourages outdoor enthusiasts to help stop the spread of invasive species through simple actions. This year’s theme, “Partnering Together to Protect Our Favorite Places”, focuses on the importance of collaboration with Invasives Canada and CONABIO to illustrate how actions can create meaningful change across North America.
