Habitat projects such as this are a critical piece of wildlife conservation in Michigan. From maintaining nesting structures and improving wetland function to restoring access and managing vegetation, volunteer efforts help ensure that public lands continue to support strong wildlife populations and quality outdoor experiences. These projects directly benefit species that hunters and wildlife watchers value, while also contributing to broader conservation outcomes.
Participants are encouraged to wear closed-toed boots and weather-appropriate clothing, as the project will take place outdoors and will run rain or shine unless severe weather occurs. Volunteers of all experience levels are welcome, and this is a great opportunity to introduce friends or family members to hands-on conservation work.
If you’re interested in giving back to the land while connecting with fellow conservationists, we encourage you to register for this project and join us in the field. The On the Ground program works statewide to conserve, protect, and enhance Michigan’s natural resources through partnerships with the Michigan DNR and organizations such as the National Wild Turkey Federation, U.S. Forest Service, Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation, and many others.
Together, we can continue to strengthen Michigan’s outdoor heritage, one project at a time.
