On the Ground: Herbivore Exclosure Removal in Pigeon River Country State Forest
On Saturday, September 6, 2025, MUCC's On the Ground program partnered with the Michigan Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation and the Michigan DNR for their annual Fall Rendezvous in the Pigeon River Country State Forest in Otsego County. This partnership has been maintained since 2014, with volunteers from across the state attending.
Volunteers Help Research
Volunteers removed elk exclosures across public land that were originally installed in the early 1980’s. The goal of this fencing was to evaluate the effects of ungulate (elk and deer) browse on regenerating aspen. The aspen stands have reached or will shortly be reaching their targeted harvest rotation and the research project has completed data collection and is in the final stages. In total, volunteers removed six elk exclosures allowing 0.6 acres of wildlife habitat to become accessible to larger species again.
Why is it Important?
Aspen trees are a critical food source for wildlife, including elk; however, these exclosures are beneficial for research and to assist in the regeneration of important vegetation. Preventing herbivory on a regenerating aspen stand can be beneficial to protect the trees from excessive pressure on vegetation, thereby allowing young trees to progress to the next life stage. In the case of heavy browsing, aspen regeneration can be heavily reduced or even eliminated. The renewal of vegetation is important in sustaining wildlife populations as species like aspen are utilized by several species from the roots to their buds.

Want to participate in one of our habitat enhancement projects? Visit our website for more information and a list of upcoming events. We work to conserve and enhance public lands by hosting volunteer workdays throughout the state geared toward habitat improvement. Common habitat projects include invasive species removal, wood duck boxes, river cleanups, tree plantings, and more. All ages are welcome, so bring a friend or two if you’d like!
