March 2025 NRC Preview

The March Natural Resources Commission (NRC) will have a wildlife conservation order (WCO) re-opening of year-round coyote hunting for information.

The meeting will take place next Thursday, March 13, at the Blanford Nature Center in Grand Rapids.

At the February meeting Commissioner Walters requested an amendment to the WCO to reopen coyote season. This comes after the commission illegally partially closed coyote season from April 15-July 15 at the March 2024 meeting.

After the overstep by the commission MUCC and the Michigan Trappers and Predator Callers Association (MTPCA) both filed a lawsuit against the commission for their illegal closure of the hunting season.

The order will be eligible for action at the April meeting.

The commission will also have orders for information on waterfowl regulations, and the number of dogs that can be used during the bear training season.

Wildlife Conservation Order Amendment #3 of 2025 would set waterfowl regulations for this regulatory cycle.

Wildlife Conservation Order Amendment #5 of 2025 is a compromise with stakeholders on the number of dogs that can be used during the training season, allowing for an additional two to be brough to the location of a treed bear.

Up for action are bear regulations, including quotas, and hunting and trapping regulations at the Gete Mino Mshkiigan property. More information on these orders can be found in MUCC’s February NRC preview

MUCC will be streaming the meeting on our Facebook page as technology allows.

On Saturday, July 12, 2025, MUCC hosted another successful Manistee River Cleanup at High Bridge Boat Launch in partnership with Steelhead Manifesto, USDA Forest Service, and the Michigan DNR. This annual event has taken place for the last 11 years, with MUCC having been involved from the very beginning. This is also one of our highest attended events with around 60 volunteers each year committed to cleaning up the river for all to enjoy.
