The Bulldogs are shooting over 50 percent from the field and averaging 82.1 points, but they also have allowed opponents to score at least 70 in six of their seven contests. Mississippi State is shooting just 31.9 percent from 3-point range - the one area on offense where it is struggling. The Kangaroos haven’t been as efficient on offense, but they play a challenging zone defense that successfully has stifled opponents at Municipal Auditorium for four straight games. “We are doing a lot of work in the zone and getting ready to attack the zone for what we expect to be 40 minutes of zone,” Bulldogs coach Ben Howland told reporters.

ABOUT MISSISSIPPI STATE (4-3): Five players are averaging double figures in scoring, led by Gavin Ware’s 20 points and 70.9 shooting percentage. Ware and Craig Sword have combined for 23 blocks, which accounts for 62 percent of the team’s total. Aric Holman resumed practicing this week for the first time since undergoing knee surgery in September, while I.J. Ready is questionable for Saturday due to a knee injury.

ABOUT UMKC (5-4): LaVell Boyd (15.6 points) and Martez Harrison (15.4) are the only Kangaroo players with scoring averages higher than 7.6 points. UMKC’s zone defense is limiting opponents to 38.1 percent shooting at home, while its 3-point shooting improves from 38.1 percent overall to 43.3 on its own court. Starting guard Noah Knight has not played since Nov. 17 due to an undisclosed injury.

1. Mississippi State defeated UMKC 82-64 the last time these teams met in 2004.

2. Howland removed Demetrius Houston, who reportedly will seek a transfer, from the Bulldogs’ roster Thursday after suspending him for conduct detrimental to the team in November.

3. Boyd has recorded two 25-point performances this season, including one in UMKC’s previous game.
