The 2005 Michigan Out-of-Doors broadhead test was conducted independently by Gary Todd of Pro-release (www.prorelease.com) and Gabe VanWormer, Producer of Michigan Out-of-Doors Television. The shooting platform for the test was a Bowtech Old Glory mounted on Gary’s X-ring Machine (http://www.prorelease.com/xring.aspx) to ensure that every broadhead was tested identically. Two shots were fired with the field point tipped shaft to ensure the bow was hitting the same hole every time. A broadhead was selected and fitted to the arrow and tuned with a spinner. Corrections were made until the broadhead spun true. The arrow was then fired into the same target as the field point and the difference between the field point and broadhead was measured with a micrometer. Procedure for penetration- Bow was paper-tuned and a broadhead-tipped arrow was fired into the foam and ¾-inch, 1-foot x 1-foot sheet of plywood. Measurements were taken as to how far the head penetrated the backside of the board. Plywood was cut to ensure no broadhead hit a visible knot on the top and bottom visible layers of the sheet. Procedure for Durability- Results of penetration test on the plywood were noted and the broadhead was extracted from wood. Broadhead was compared to a brand new head and differences were noted. Procedure for Sharpness- One broadhead was selected from an unopened pack. Blades were removed (when possible) and attempts were made to dry-shave arm hair. |
