Fixed Broadhead Results

Nitron (100gr. fixed)
N.A.P.’s Nitron is a short shanked broadhead with a sturdy tip and hefty blades. Blades are replaceable and are held in with small set screws. One thing to note is, the set screws are recessed so that they don’t impede penetration.

Cutting Diameter: 1 1/16”
Blade Thickness: 27/1000”
Penetration: (3/4 inch plywood)- 0.37”
Sharpness: (Shaved hair)- Yes
Actual Grain Weights: (3 tested randomly)- 101.5, 100.7 and 101.8
Accuracy: 1.34”
Durability: The Nitron held up very well with only one blade showing any signs that it had been fired into plywood with a small nick on the edge. Other than that, the Nitron performed very well in our testing.

Rocky Mountain (www.rockymtbroadheads.com)

Turbo (100gr. fixed)
The Turbo is another short shanked head with three tough blades. Featuring an offset blade design, the Turbo allows bowhunters to match up their blades with their vanes, right wing or left wing. Blades are replaceable and are held in by an exposed retaining screw.

Cutting Diameter: 1 1/8”
Blade Thickness: 30/1000”
Penetration: (3/4 inch plywood)- 0.06”
Sharpness: (Shaved hair)- Yes
Actual Grain Weights: (3 tested randomly)- 102, 102 and 102.2 Accuracy- 1.78”
Durability: The Turbo lost one blade as one of the retaining screws sheered off. Other than that the tip and blades were still quite sharp.

G5 (www.g5outdoors.com)

Montec (100gr. fixed)
Made in Michigan, the Montec features head to thread, one-piece construction. It is a cut-on-impact, three-blade broadhead. Blades are not replaceable but are easily sharpened due to the angle of the blades. Head is constructed of solid stainless steel.

Cutting Diameter: 1 1/16”
Blade Thickness: 100/1000”
Penetration (3/4 inch plywood)- 0.51”
Sharpness (Shaved hair)- No
Actual Grain Weights (3 tested randomly)- 104, 104.1 and 104.6
Accuracy- 2.20”
Durability: The Montec looked the same as when it came out of the package.

Vortex (www.mar-den.com)

Apache (100gr. fixed)
The Apache is a four-blade, cut-on-impact head. Both blades are large and offer lots of cutting surface as compared to other heads in our test. Blades are replaceable.

Cutting Diameter- 1 1/8”
Blade Thickness- 32/1000”
Penetration (3/4 inch plywood)- 0.53”
Sharpness (Shaved hair)- Somewhat
Actual Grain Weights (3 tested randomly)- 102.5, 102.7 and 102.8
Accuracy- 5.85”
Durability- The Apache showed only one minor ding in One of the blades.

Eastman Outfitters (www.eastmanoutfitters.com)

Sabre Titanium (100gr. fixed)
Eastman’s Sabre is a three bladed head that is Titanium coated which is supposed to be more durable than anodized aluminum. A trocar tip is out front and blades are replaceable.

Cutting Diameter: 1 1/8”
Blade Thickness: 20/1000”
Penetration: (3/4 inch plywood)- 0.78”
Sharpness (Shaved hair): Somewhat
Actual Grain Weights: (3 tested randomly)- 101.3, 101.8 and 102.8
Accuracy: 2.98”
Durability: One blade cracked just aft of the support but no other damage was noted.

Muzzy (www.muzzy.com)

3-Blade (100gr. fixed)
If you don’t know what a Muzzy is, you’ve probably been living under a rock for the past decade or so. If that’s the case then the Muzzy features a trocar tip, aluminum ferrule and three blades that neatly slide in and out to be easily replaced.

Cutting Diameter: 1 3/16”
Blade Thickness: .027”
Penetration (3/4 inch plywood): 0.81”
Sharpness (Shaved hair): Yes
Actual Grain Weights (3 tested randomly): 96.1, 96.5 and 97.1
Accuracy: 2.98”
Durability: We were somewhat surprised to see some bending in the blades. Other than that, there was no other damage to the broadhead.

American Broadhead (www.americanbroadhead.com)

Sonic (100gr. fixed)
A relative newcomer to the market, the Sonic features a cut-on-impact, three-blade design. The head is extremely compact and offers replaceable blades.

Cutting Diameter: 7/8”
Blade Thickness: 36/1000”
Penetration (3/4 inch plywood): 0.61”
Sharpness (Shaved hair): Yes
Actual Grain Weights (3 tested randomly): 97.3, 97.8 and 98.1
Accuracy: 1.61”
Durability: Tip was curled over on each blade. Blades were dinged up.
