In December we held the first few meeting in a series of events promoting the first 5 years of the Michigan Pheasant Restoration Initiative, as well as the open enrollment period for General Conservation Reserve Program (CRP). The exciting part is that we have more events coming up!
Each of these meetings creates an opportunity where private land owners are able to come to a meeting and meet with habitat program experts from their area. They are able to talk about the specific criteria of the financial assistance to improve habitat, as well as the unique aspects of how their property fits in with the different financial options they may have.
One example of financial assistance available in much of Southern Michigan includes General CRP, which would be beneficial for landowners with large chunks of land - with a cropping history - they are looking to enroll into the program. The program pays for most of the habitat work, and also pays an annual rental rate for the duration of the 15 year contract. To apply for General CRP, the deadline is near the end of February.
Continuous CRP is another option, but is more fitting for landowners with smaller pieces of property - again, with a cropping history. The difference is that there is not a specific enrollment period, like with the General CRP. You can visit your local Farm Bill Biologist or Farm Service Agency for more details on both of these programs of you are unable to attend a meeting in your area.
