Special Advanced Camp Programming

This summer Advanced Camp will feature training on how to use a GPS unit and all about geocaching. Campers will learn how to use a handheld GPS unit, find a geocache, how to set up a geocache, and the rules of geocaching. Representatives from Michigan Geocaching Organization (MiGO) will be helping to lead campers through the geocaching activities.

What Is Geocaching?

Geocaching is a family-friendly activity that combines the use of GPS units with the exploration of the great outdoors. A geocache is a container hidden outdoors and contains a log book and usually some other items for the finder to trade. GPS coordinates for geocaches can be found online, enter them into your unit, and then go in search of the cache. The rules of seeking a geocache are easy: Sign the log, if you take something - leave something of equal or greater value in trade, and return the container exactly as you found it.

MiGO

MiGO is a nonprofit group that was established in 2002 and is an affiliate club of the Michigan United Conservation Clubs. MiGO's goal is to serve as a forum for communication between Michigan geocachers, the general public, and land management officials, in a cooperative effort to promote the sport of geocaching, an appreciation of the outdoors, and good stewardship of the land and environment. With more than 1,100 members state-wide, MiGO has become the "go to group" for land managers with questions about geocaching.
