For more than 60 years, Michigan United Conservation Clubs has offered Michigan’s kids a summer camp experience specifically geared towards educating kids about conservation and the great outdoors.

The Michigan Out-of-Doors Camp for Kids is a truly Michigan experience. The camp grounds are located in southeast Michigan at the Cedar Lake Outdoor Center near Chelsea. There are three different age levels of camp available and each is staffed by college-level counselors.

At MUCC, we truly believe in our mission of Conservation through Education. The Michigan Out-of-Doors Camp for Kids experience provides kids with hands-on lessons in a wide array of outdoor activities such as hiking, canoeing, archery and shooting as well as structured educational lessons that focus on conservation themes in Michigan.

WHAT IS MUCC’S MICHIGAN OUT-OF-DOORS CAMP FOR KIDS?

The Michigan Out-of-Doors Camp for Kids is, quite simply, a weeklong summer adventure designed to instill a love for the outdoors into Michigan’s kids. Since 1946, Michigan United Conservation Clubs has helped more than 50,000 kids learn the value of conservation while introducing them to the wonderful world they live in right here in Michigan’s great outdoors. The camp offers a full week of instruction and guidance from counselors and instructors in activities ranging from canoeing to archery to hiking. Campers learn basic firearms safety, have the opportunity to earn their hunter education certificates and learn the value of sound conservation practices.

WHY IS THE CAMP IMPORTANT?

Today’s kids have an array of summer entertainment venues to choose from. Few of them, however, offer our kids the ability to learn about the greatest playground of them all – the outdoors. Instilling a conservation ethic in kids is a crucial step to ensuring that Michigan’s future leaders will value our natural resources. The goal of the camp is to not only let the kids have a great time enjoying Michigan’s outdoor playground but to teach them the value of conserving those resources for the future.

HOW DOES THE CAMP WORK?
There is a Michigan Out-of-Doors Camp for Kids experience available for a wide array of kids. MUCC offers three levels of camp: Juniors (for ages 9-11) and regular (ages 12-15). There is also one week of Advanced Camp offered for kids ages 13-16 who have previous outdoor experience.

IS IT A SAFE ENVIRONMENT FOR MY KIDS?
MUCC takes great pride in its camp. In 2007, the camp received a glowing report from state health and safety inspectors, passing its annual inspection with perfect scores. Counselors are typically college students from within Michigan. Each undergoes a careful interview process and must pass criminal background checks, drug screening and attends an extensive training session.
