Michigan sportsmen’s help is needed to recruit Senator Debbie Stabenow as a co-sponsor of the Sportsmen’s Act (S. 2363), a bi-partisan package of pro-sportsmen legislation that is currently pending in the U.S. Senate. The Act, if passed would not only reauthorize the North American Wetlands Conservation Act (NAWCA), but would allow states to permanently offer the Duck Stamp electronically and increase access to public lands, among other items important to hunters and anglers.
NAWCA translates more than $1.26 billion in federal funds into more than $5 billion in on-the-ground conservation in North America. Over the last 20 years, NAWCA has done extraordinary things for ducks. Through the funding of over 1,600 projects, over 20 million acres of wetland have been conserved and enhanced.
In Michigan alone, 47 NAWCA projects are underway or completed conserving a total of 47,272 acres of wildlife habitat through contributions of more than $16.7 million, which in turn stimulate more than $58.1 million in partner contributions.
The package of bills—collectively known as the Sportsmen’s Act—addresses the top concerns of American hunters, anglers and recreational shooters. Earlier this year, a similar package passed the U.S. House of Representatives with broad support.
In addition to NAWCA, the Sportsmen’s Act includes language to:
  • increase access to public lands;
  • promote the construction of shooting ranges on public lands;
  • prohibit the U.S. EPA from regulating lead ammunition and fishing tackle;
  • allow for the importation of 41 legally harvested trophies taken before polar bears were listed as an endangered species in 2008;
  • permanently authorize the online sale of duck stamps;
  • Reauthorize the National Fish and Wildlife Foundation;
Please Take Action Today! Michigan sportsmen and women are encouraged to call Senator Stabenow’s office today at 202-224-4822 in Washington, DC or in Michigan at (517) 203-1760. Ask Senator Stabenow to co-sponsor the Sportsmen’s Act of 2014. Thank You!
