Aquatic Invasive Species Awareness Week Continues.

Right now is Aquatic Invasive Species (AIS) Awareness Week, June 7-15, in Michigan. Last weekend the DNR and DEQ set up mobile boat wash stations at landing sites to help boaters properly clean their wrd-ais-weeds-trailer_456382_7boats in order to reduce the chances of them spreading invasive species from lake to lake. An important part of this week is educating the public about how to stop the spread. Boaters are required by law to:
  • Remove aquatic plants from boats and launching equipment
  • Drain all water from live wells and bilges before leaving the access site
  • Dispose of unused bait in the trash, not the water
  • Don’t Transfer fish to water bodies where they were not caught
Getting involved in removing invasive species is a great way to protect out waters. On the Ground is coordinating an event in Alpena to remove European Frog-bit from and area. You can find out more and sign up for the event here:
