374,000+ Signatures Submited in Support of Scientific Wildlife Management

LANSING, Mich. (May 27, 2014)
CPWM Logo Citizens for Professional Wildlife Management (CPWM) today submitted 374,130 petition signatures to the Secretary of State in support of the Scientific Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act. Merle Shepard, Chair of Citizens for Professional Wildlife Management, was joined by Senator Tom Casperson (R – Escanaba) and Representative Jon Bumstead (R – Newaygo) at the event. “Citizens for Professional Wildlife Management has collected more than 374,000 signatures in this effort, which is over 121,000 more than either of the referendums collected by radical out-of-state animal rights groups that oppose our efforts in conservation,” said Merle Shepard. “This initiative will not guarantee a wolf hunt; it will only guarantee that the decision about whether or not to have another wolf hunt, and other hunting and fishing decisions, are based on scientific data and the recommendations of professional biologists.” The Scientific Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act is a citizen-initiated law to:
  • Ensure that decisions affecting the taking of fish and game are made using principles of sound scientific fish and wildlife management
  • Provide for free hunting, fishing and trapping licenses for active members of the military
  • Provide appropriations for rapid response funding to protect Michigan fisheries from Asian carp and other aquatic invasive species
“The out-of-state special interests who oppose our efforts fail to understand what most residents of the Upper Peninsula and 67 percent of Michigan residents overall do – that in some parts of the UP, wolves are killing pets and livestock and entering our communities, without fear, and that sound science should determine the bounds of conservation and protection against such species,” said Senator Casperson. “Management of Michigan wildlife should not be dictated by anti-hCPWM 2unting organizations who care more about raising money than they do about Michigan residents who must live with the policies the radical organizations support.” Decisions made by the Natural Resources Commission under Public Act 21 of 2013 – which the Scientific Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act aims to protect – are at the recommendation of Department of Natural Resources biologists with the support of the top wolf biologist in the nation. The Natural Resources Commission is a bipartisan coalition that takes testimony from DNR biologists, independent biologists and experts, and public input. “The citizen’s initiative we are celebrating today is the kind of sound policy that I will be proud to stand in support of on the House floor,” added Representative Bumstead. “The fact that through this legislation, we will be able to defend hunting rights by making wildlife decisions based on sound science, put a plan in place to ward off Asian carp and other invasive species in our waterways, and keep hunting and fishing licenses free for our troops is truly a remarkable accomplishment.” Citizens for Professional Wildlife Management is a coalition of Michigan conservation, hunting, fishing and trapping organizations formed to pass the Scientific Fish and Wildlife Conservation Act. Its steering committee includes representatives from Michigan United Conservation Clubs, Michigan Bear Hunters Association, Michigan Trappers and Predator Callers Association, Michigan Hunting Dog Federation, Michigan chapters of Safari Club International, Upper Peninsula Sportsmen’s Alliance, U.P. Whitetails, Inc., U.P. Bear Houndsmen, and Rocky Mountain Elk Foundation. CPWM 1
