First Year of Mentored Youth Program a SuccessJanuary 10th, 2013
With more than 10,000 participants in 2012, the Mentored Youth Hunting Program saw only one reported hunting* accident in its first year!
The Mentored Youth Hunting Program concept originated from an MUCC 2010 Annual Convention Resolution and resulting Hunter Heritage legislation that was signed by Governor Snyder in 2011. The legislation created the Mentored Youth Hunting license package, which is truly a small investment in the future of Michigan.
For children under the age of 10 at the time of purchase, $7.50 will get a package license to hunt turkey (spring and fall) on private or public land, deer (two tags, any deer) and small game, trap furbearers and fish for all species. These licenses go on sale for 2013 seasons on March 1.
Congrats and thank you to all who participated in mentoring a youth, we are now creating the next generation of natural resource stewards.
And remember, time is still left on the 2012-2013 license to participate in some small game hunting, ice fishing, or trapping this winter, so get out there and enjoy Michigan’s great OutofDoors!
*We had previously reported that there were no accidents, however a late report just received indicates there was one accident in 2012 involving a young hunter.
