Give Input on DNR Hunting & Fishing GuidebooksJanuary 9th, 2012
I get more calls from people who are asking for assistance in finding out “what the law really is”, either because they can’t find it or don’t understand how its written up in the DNR guides. I also get calls from angry hunters, trappers or anglers who got tickets–but its important to know that ignorance of the law is not a defense. I have lots of thoughts on how things could be better laid out, reworded, or even simplified to make them easier to understand and I’m sure you do as well (especially if you are one of the above callers). Now we have our chance.
The Michigan Department of Natural Resources (DNR) is seeking input from hunters and anglers on ways to improve its annual hunting digests and fishing guide (links go to the current 2011 version of each guide). Feedback gathered from focus groups and surveys conducted over the next several months will aid the DNR’s efforts to make these publications more useful to customers. Improved digests and guides will be distributed in 2013.
Anyone who has ever hunted, trapped, or fished in Michigan is invited to complete a brief survey now through Feb. 3, 2012. The data received from this preliminary survey will help identify discussion topics for the focus groups. The DNR will conduct focus groups with avid and novice hunters and anglers in late February and March.

I’m pleased to see the DNR undertaking this task; this is a good example of reaching out to their customers to try to service them better. I hope you will participate!
